child writing in book on floor

Our pre-school nursery classrooms are a home away from home: a happy place full of friends where your child can be themself. It is a place full of interesting things to do, but also a place where your child can take time out and just be quiet if they want to.

Most of our nurseries have one pre-school room, but some are split into two classrooms, with a 3-year-olds class and a 4-year-olds class. Whichever your local nursery, you can be assured that your child will learn in a bright and spacious classroom full of fun and exciting activities based on your child’s needs and interests.

Your child will have access to a toilet block with low-level sinks and toilets to develop their independence. We believe outdoor play is very important and your child will be able to go out twice a day to play outdoors in the fresh air.

Learning new skills

The layout of the classroom encourages exploration, communication and the development of relationships on all levels. Everything reflects a dedication to quality, beauty and to your child’s ability to do things for themself. Maria Montessori saw that careful preparation of the environment is an essential ingredient for the successful development of children.

The mixture of foundation stage development goals and Montessori surroundings provides your child with enriched learning experiences within a beautiful environment designed to awaken their senses.

Montessori activities

Our staff apply the Montessori theories within the setting, teaching your child to be in touch with their environment, and demonstrate how to do things, encouraging them to be independent.

The very first activities in a Montessori nursery develop your child’s ability to look after themself and their environment and encourage respect for their surroundings and their fellow students.

It is one of Montessori’s principles to always follow your child’s nature. Whenever your child tends to act spontaneously and constructively in any particular way, Montessori methods help your child along their path.

Wide range of activities

Fully trained and experienced staff implement weekly topics and plans to fulfil your child’s day with a variety of activities that not only engage them but cover the early years curriculum, to give your child the very best introduction to their forthcoming school life.

Your child will also have the opportunity to take part in extracurricular activities, such as football, music, yoga, Dinky Dancers, Musical Bumps and dance, delivered by professional teachers, who are invited weekly to offer these classes. Different activities are offered at different nurseries.

Meals and nutrition

In the pre-school rooms, mealtimes are a sociable occasion where your child will be encouraged to serve their own food and feed themself. We promote good manners through leading by example and praising good behaviour. Your child will be provided with healthy cooked meals.

Development records

We make and document regular observations of your child to ensure that they are learning and developing to the best of their ability. Your child will also have a folder that documents their progress and development.

We are more than happy to discuss your child’s day and their progress with you, and a staff member will always be available to chat with you.

Preparation for school

From an early age, your child’s mathematical mind is supported and developed. Activities are planned and organised to implement this. Language and maths are taught on a one-to-one basis and in groups at your child’s own pace. Pre-school is a crucial age range and staff at Townsend Montessori Nurseries strive to arm your child with the skills, knowledge and confidence needed for their next steps into the school classroom.
