Job Purpose and Accountability

The Deputy Room Leader reports to the Room Leader in the first instance.

The deputy room leader leads and manages a room within the nursery in the absence of the room leader and must be able to work with a team to provide high quality learning opportunities and care for the children in that room, based on the needs and interests of those children

Lead the promotion of health, safety and wellbeing of the children in the room.

Be a key person carrying out all related responsibilities in building relationships with a small group of children and their families.

Assist the room supervisor with providing first line supervision to the staff in the room

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Respond appropriately to any issues requiring confidentiality
  • Maintain and review accurate and effective children’s records
  • Demonstrate and lead good practice with the team and ensure compliance with the EYFS framework
  • Deploy staff effectively to maintain staffing ratios in accordance with statutory regulations
  • Attend and encourage team to attend training sessions and staff meetings necessary for continuing professional development
  • Lead and promote parent partnership
  • Work with the team and support the manager to achieve a “good” or better Ofsted outcome
  • Keeping and monitoring accident, incident and risk assessment records
  • Liaise with parents and staff to ensure smooth transition process
  • Practice and role model positive behaviour management techniques

Qualifications

  • A full and relevant level 3 qualification
  • First Aid
  • A recognised up to date 12 hour paediatric first aid certificate

Knowledge

  • Observation and planning – Recognise the importance of observation and be able to organise staff to enable effective observations and plans to happen
  • Curriculum Framework – Good knowledge of the EYFS
  • Safeguarding/child protection issue – A thorough understanding of child protection and how to apply safe guarding procedures
  • Equality and diversity – Understand the importance of ensuring equality and diversity in a nursery setting
  • Transitions – Understand and support children’s transitions
  • Managing self – Ability to self-manage, be flexible, adaptable and embrace new ways of doing things
  • Confidentiality – Understand issues of confidentiality and its importance in the early years setting
